Sunday morning I got to preach on Revelation 2 at our church called Sanctuary here in southern California. I really enjoy preaching at our church. We are growing; people are coming to know the Lord. It’s an exciting place to be.
But as I was preaching I began to think, first of all, what a privilege it is to be able to stand up in front of people and share the Word of God. There’s a certain joy that comes our way that cannot be taken lightly.
The second thing that occurred to me is how important it is for us to be accurate about how we explain or expound the Word of God, not to add anything to it but to provide the teaching background to help people understand what God is saying through His powerful Word. Sloppiness in preaching is not acceptable. We need to stay true to the Word.
Third, I felt an unusual sense of responsibility for the souls who were in the room while I was preaching Sunday morning. I know it’s not my job to convict people. That’s the work of the Holy Spirit. It’s not my position to draw people to Christ. That’s the work of the Holy Spirit, as well. But it is my responsibility to accurately, with power and passion, explain the good news of Jesus Christ.
Finally, I just realized as I was preaching that it was fun. It’s fun to watch people connect with the truth. It’s fun to be able to watch people better understand who God is because of the time spent explaining God’s Word.
Preaching – it is a big deal and a heavy responsibility, but it provides great joy.
