Whitney Lyon is an eighty-plus-year-old man who lives in Palm Desert, California. We’ve been friends for about fifteen years. I got to know Whitney through his wife, Lorraine, who was a prayer warrior. Lorraine prayed for me every day. When I’d go on a trip, she would pray during the time I was in the air that I would safely arrive. She would pray through my speaking schedule. She would call me (sometimes at all hours of the morning) just to tell me that she was praying. When Lorraine died a few years ago, I was one of the last people that she spoke to. She came out of an almost coma-like state when I entered the room and carried on a conversation.
Lorraine’s lifelong companion, Whitney, is a polio victim. He’s always been in a wheelchair. He loved Lorraine very much. The reason I want to talk about Whitney is because I was able to talk to him about AMF. I told him about our camps. I told him about our prison ministry. I explained to him how God is using ordinary people to do extraordinary things within the mission. I gave him a vision of what we can do in reaching our country for Christ and the way we are thrifty and good stewards of our resources.
What amazes me is that Whitney lit up. He said, “I’ve never heard of this. I’m so excited – this is such a great thing!” For me, it was exciting to see a man, eighty-plus years old, get so excited about what we’re about. I can’t wait to tell more people about AMF.
