I serve in the North Olympic Peninsula of Washington State. I work with Leeann Deutsch, who also serves with InFaith, primarily with Hispanics in Forks, a small town on the western coast of Washington about 1-1/4 hours’ drive from home.
We minister at a gated mobile home park with over 100 trailers, where the owner allows us to use the rec/mail room. I teach ESL (English as a Second Language) to ladies from Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador in classes or individual tutoring times as our schedules allow and students request. These students speak Spanish and/or a Guatemalan tribal language (Mam or Kanjobal). I’m still learning Spanish and lead a short weekly inductive Bible study, oral style, in Spanish, with lots of patience and help from the ladies with new vocabulary.
I assist Leeann to teach weekly after-school Kidz Klub for children in preschool through 6th grade. Children learn English after attending school. During summer months, we try to hold ESL classes for Guatemalans who often work as salal brush pickers or packers (floral industry) and rarely have time off for classes except during May-July when brush-picking season is closed.
I usually assist Olympic Bible Camp as camp nurse or music leader for two weeks during the summer and am part of the camp’s planning group during rest of year. I work part-time as a nurse at a small not-for-profit assisted living center, where God opens doors to show and share Jesus’ love with both staff and residents.
