What is Pregnant/Post-Partum Support Ministry?

Pregnant and post-partum support ministry provides comprehensive care for expectant and new mothers through practical assistance, emotional encouragement, mental health support, and spiritual guidance during pregnancy and the critical first year after birth. This ministry addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of mothers through services including prenatal education, childbirth preparation, postpartum care coordination, mental health screening and referral, practical support like meals and childcare, peer support groups, and pastoral counseling. Support ministry missionaries walk alongside mothers during this vulnerable season, offering hope and help that can save lives.

The Importance of Pregnant/Post-Partum Support Ministry in America Today

Maternal mental health has emerged as a crisis in American healthcare. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, maternal mental health conditions—including suicide and overdose—are the leading cause of maternal mortality in the United States. The Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health reports that maternal mental health disorders are the leading complication of childbirth, affecting 1 in 5 U.S. women (20%).

The severity of postpartum mental health challenges cannot be overstated. Suicide accounts for approximately 20% of postpartum deaths among new mothers, according to research published by ISPOR. Despite this crisis, only 20% of women are screened for postpartum depression, leaving the vast majority without identification or treatment for potentially life-threatening conditions.

The impact extends beyond mothers to their children, as untreated maternal mental health disorders lead to negative early childhood development outcomes including impaired cognitive and language development, behavioral issues, and poor sleep quality. Faith-based support during pregnancy and postpartum periods offers critical intervention that addresses not only practical and emotional needs but also spiritual dimensions of maternal health.
