What is Prison Ministry?

Prison ministry serves incarcerated individuals, their families, and those transitioning back into society through spiritual guidance, discipleship, counseling, and reentry support. This ministry takes the gospel behind bars while helping those affected by incarceration find hope, healing, and transformation. Prison missionaries provide Bible studies, one-on-one mentoring, chapel services, family support, and practical assistance with life skills, job training, and community reintegration—addressing both the spiritual and practical barriers that keep people trapped in cycles of criminal behavior.

The Importance of Prison Ministry in America Today

America holds the distinction of having the world's highest incarceration rate, with over 1.9 million people currently held in various correctional facilities as of 2025. The Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that 82% of people incarcerated in state prisons were arrested at some point during the 10 years following their release, with 66% rearrested within three years and more than half within the first year. Nearly 44% of criminals released return before the first year out of prison, highlighting the need for rehabilitation and reentry support.

These recidivism rates reveal a revolving door that devastates individuals, families, and communities. However, research demonstrates that faith-based interventions significantly reduce these rates. Inmates who participate in chaplaincy and religious programs show substantially lower recidivism compared to those who do not. Prison ministry addresses the spiritual transformation that changes hearts and redirects lives, offering hope that incarceration alone cannot provide.
