“O Happy Day!” (Inspired To Write, Part II)

A poem by Randy Elliott, who serves with InFaith in Arizona

Oh happy day, when the
Christ child was born;
in a humble manger,
lay God, in human form.

On earth was man,
by sin so very torn.
Among them was Joseph,
crushed emotions, feeling forlorn.

In a quandary, he was,
until the angel came;
“Take Mary, with child.
Give the baby, Jesus the Name.”

Quite certain the angel’s
words were true, Mary
he took to himself, and
her baby boy too.

Nine months Joseph waited,
For nine months berated.
Steadfast, he held to the Word of
God, then off to Bethlehem he trod.

No room to be found,
on a cool, dark night,
until finally a stable,
with dim candlelight.

Then into this world
the God-Man came,
a boy named Jesus;
Joseph gave Him the Name.

He grew like a shoot,
a root from dry ground,
one day in the temple,
a crowd to confound.

With hammer and nails,
He humbly served His own
in a simple carpenter’s shop,
perhaps working mostly alone.

His hands were splintered
from the wood that He shaved.
Was it a constant reminder
of all that He gave?

A carpenter’s “son,” He
lived to die. When the
work was finally completed,
“It is finished!” He cried.

Oh happy day, when the
Christ child was born.
The Savior for all, ’twas
God, in human form!
