Letting Love Lead

I’m asking God to help me have a heart of love for people this year. I want to love them not with a “because I should do it” attitude, or an “it’s the Christian thing to do” attitude, or a “because they love me first (or well)” attitude, but with a love that is purely from God, a love that will reflect Christ in the things that I am doing and the way that I am being as I work with others, serve others, and meet them along the way.

One day this week seemed like it was particularly packed with lessons for me in this New Year’s endeavor. As usual, as I was parking the car that day, I had running through my mind the things I wanted to get done. I had only a few key items on my to-do list that day. I like to be efficient, checking things off my list and moving on. But that day, God kept giving me just the situations and interactions to help me love better. Love Beyond Service

“It was just as important to know the person’s name and their background as it was that they got a cup of coffee or they got something to eat,” one of our Kaleo participants commented while reflecting on his team’s week of ministry in Portland, Oregon. They had been involved in several ministries throughout the week, providing very tangible needs to the people of the city. However, this guy learned throughout the week that ministry is not simply about us coming to the city, doing a few good things for people, and then leaving, feeling good about ourselves for what we did. Charles and Ruth Luster

Charles and Ruth Luster have been with the mission forever. I wouldn’t want to guess how old they are, but certainly they are in the sunset of their life. I sat with them at Dan Curtis’s funeral, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching them, people who have spent many times with the Lord. I listened to them groan, “Amen!” at every scent of the blessed hope.

We were the only people in the row, so as I sat next to them, I was able to observe who they are as people. Let me bring a couple of things to your attention: Continue
