The passing of Dr. Yong Soon Kim

Dr. Yong Soon Kim of Houston, TX was given back to our Lord on Christmas Day at the age of 91, surrounded by her loving family.

Dr. Kim was born in Seoul, South Korea in 1934 to Kyung Yeop Ahn and Eib-Bun Chung. She was introduced to her late husband, Rev. Young Whan Kim, through a mutual friend. Their romance budded through written correspondence across the Pacific Ocean while she received her medical degree from Sudoh Women’s Medical College. She immigrated to the United States in 1964, where she was a practicing anesthesiologist in Philadelphia, PA. Upon her retirement at age 52, she pursued her true passion for financial investment, extending her generosity to family and friends. Dr. and Rev. Kim spent their final years in Houston, TX, where they enjoyed valuable time near close family.

Dr. Kim is survived by her daughter, Sheila, son-in-law Jeffrey, and granddaughters Samantha and Alexandra (Davis).

Testimonies of her impact

The Kims had a profound impact on us as new missionaries in the early ’90s. Through their passion for reaching children for Christ—especially through camping—they helped set us on a lifelong path of missionary service. For us, they represented the heart of American Missionary Fellowship (now InFaith) at the home office, always kind, welcoming, and encouraging as we began our journey as greenhouse missionaries.

Timothy Hoffman, InFaith Missionary Field Director

My lasting memory with the Kims is their kindness and hospitality. Out of their love for missionary candidates, they prepared a generous, authentic meal for us. What I remember most isn’t the food itself, but the joy of being welcomed so warmly—and I can still picture their smiling faces as we shared that time together.
