Louis and Carrie serve in suburban Grand Junction, CO which sits on the western slope of Colorado, 25 miles east of the Utah border. Grand Junction is comprised of many small communities with a combined population of 147,000. The area is famous for its rich agriculture and fruit orchards alongside large oil and gas industries.
Their local is economically, ethnically, socially, and spiritually diverse.
After seeing the need in their community, Louis and Carrie began reaching out through Camp Hope which helps kids realize they are loved, valued, and created for purpose. The Nelson's are the founders of Camp Hope and have 1,300 campers who receive full scholarships to the camping program. The Nelsons also help their campers’ families with any needs they might have; delivering food to families, praying for family and staff, and disciplining the youth. They have been called into the areas of the community which are suffering. The Nelsons build relationships with those in their community, introduce them to God, and proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ.
The Nelsons became approved candidates with InFaith in 2020.
In 2009, Louis and Carrie felt called to provide a safe place for at-risk kids in the community and tell them about the saving grace of Christ. They absolutely love what they get to do and are committed to continuing to serve the kids and families in the community.
