Angela Miller serves in Mountain Lake, a rural area of southern Minnesota. Most residents in surrounding communities are farmers. Though the community is considered to be very religious, there are many families that fall through the cracks of established church ministries.
There are many broken families in these communities, leading to a "new normal" for what families look like. Many kids live with unmarried parents or stepparents. Some children even live out of suitcases as they move between the homes of divorced parents. Additionally, there is excessive bullying that results in self-esteem issues or even isolation. These challenges can create confusion about what truth is and where to find it.
The biggest need among these kids is to feel the hope, joy, and love found in Jesus. After experiencing the brokenness that comes with divorce, tragedy that results in single-family homes, or the complexities of the foster care system, these kids simply want to know that they are important and loved. There is also a need to show these kids what healthy relationships look like.
