Area Ministry Discipleship Seniors

The Bishops have served with InFaith since 2013. Carl grew up on a dairy farm learning the value of hard work. Seeing the value of using his hands to produce a fruit of labor, Carl saw a spiritual dimension in farming that he wanted to see in the hearts of men. Becky grew up as a missionary kid whose parents, Melvin and Mildred Dreessen, served with InFaith (American Missionary Fellowship at that time) for many years. Soon after they were married, Carl began Bible college and graduated seven years later at Moody Bible Institute with a Christian Education degree. God then lead them into full-time Christian camping for 18 years while raising their family. When their children graduated and left home, they felt God was calling them to a helping hands ministry especially with the elderly. It is with this calling that God lead them to work with InFaith to serve the elderly and everyone who needs a helping hand.

Carl and Becky Bishop serve in Lenawee County in Lower Michigan. 18% of the population in this county is over the age of 65. As they visit several nursing homes it is evident that a high percent of these folks have no one to come visit them. The elderly need to hear about Jesus and his love for them. The Bishops also visit many elderly in their own homes, encouraging them through acts of service and sharing the love of Christ.

After seeing the need in their community, the Bishops felt a specific call to serve the elderly and poor;  two groups that suffer from neglect in our society today. Carl has many opportunities to meet people’s needs through a hands-on ministry which includes fixing automobiles, cutting wood, snow plowing, lawn care, making minor repairs in homes, doing a home Bible study, or by just serving as a listening ear. Carl and Becky also go to several nursing homes to give encouragement and share the love of Christ with the residents.

Carl says, “Our love for Christ and these elderly folks inspire us to be used of God to serve them.” He continues, “Sometimes it is just coming alongside them and letting them know they are loved, appreciated, and valuable to our society.”

The Bishops have served as InFaith field staff since 2013.

Soon after marrying Becky, the two went to Bible college in Detroit for three years and four more years at Moody Bible Institute. After graduating, God led the Bishops into Christian camp ministry for eighteen years while raising their family.

When their children graduated and left home, Carl and Becky felt God calling them to a new type of helping hands ministry, especially focused on the elderly and the poor. It was with this calling that God led them to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and service with InFaith.
