Dayna Carr serves in Glenwood, an under-resourced neighborhood in Greensboro, North Carolina. The community is ethnically and culturally diverse, with over twenty languages spoken throughout the nearly 2,000 households.

Glenwood was left in disrepair after a few rough decades of racial tension and decline in owner-occupancy. Over forty percent of residents live below the poverty line (more than double that of the city as a whole), and high rates of single-parent households, drug trafficking, and substance abuse are prevalent.

There is a need for residents of this community to discover their God-given dignity and worth – to realize they were created well and for a purpose. With this realization can come the restoration of the community, brought forth through Christ working in the indigenous leaders of Glenwood.

Growing up in rural poverty, Dayna recognized many of the same issues in Glenwood that she experienced as a child. After spending a summer serving the Glenwood community, she felt called to put down roots and make Glenwood her home. Since 2004, Dayna has launched and led a number of ministries focused on social justice and reconciliation. Some of her work has included a summer travel camp for urban teens, an after-school tutoring program, a Christ-centered school for at-risk middle schoolers, and internship programs for college students.

"We meet the needs of the community through sharing the love of Christ, mentoring and discipling youth, and leading programs that help develop the community as a whole," Dayna explains.

Dayna has served as InFaith field staff since January 2017.

Dayna has been involved in urban ministry since 2004. She first came to the under-resourced community of Glenwood as part of a summer urban ministry internship. Moving to the community in Greensboro, North Carolina permanently, she began to discover God’s heart for the poor, social justice, and reconciliation. The more she learned, the more passionate she became! A healthy mix of visionary and implementer, Dayna loves helping people find practical solutions to ministry challenges.

The Greensboro Urban Project is designed to walk alongside college-aged students (18-24) in developing a practical framework for understanding God's heart for the marginalized through exploring issues of race, economics, justice, community, activism and purpose. Throughout the summer, participants will lead summer programs for kids, study the Bible, discuss current social issues, and seek God's heart for the city together.

Gifts to the Greensboro Urban Project support summer programming for kids in the neighborhood, living expenses for summer interns, and other activities throughout the year. If you are giving toward a specific student's internship, please include the student's name in the...
