Leeann Deutsch serves in the Olympic Peninsula of northwest Washington. The Peninsula is surrounded by beautiful landscape, with the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the north and the Olympic Mountains to the south. Port Angeles is one of the larger cities in the area.
The Peninsula is made up of a variety of people groups, mainly Caucasian, Hispanic, and Native American. Many families in communities across the area are struggling to make ends meet. Port Angeles is a struggling port town, and Forks is an old, struggling logging community, with many lumber mills closing in recent years.
There is a great need among the Hispanic communities on the Peninsula to adjust to life in America. Many are brush pickers, brush packers, and motel workers, and work long, hard hours. They need a place where they can go to learn how to survive in the communities they live in; a place where they feel accepted and loved amid the stress of starting over.
